Engine question.
My dad bought a 1984 ford f150 xl manual transmission. It came with a different engine that my dad says Is a straight six that Is fuel InJected, a few thing were changed In the truck to make this work. But how do I know what spark plugs to get, how do I know what oil this engine needs, what If something needs to get replaced etc. I dont think simply walking Into a auto parts store and saying I want spark plugs for a straight six engine would work because there Is probably different makes, models, engines etc. The guy gave us a case of 10w 30 oil that has probably sat a few years and might of even been for the old motor that was In the vehicle so Idk If It Is used for this motor. Idk what to say etc to the shop when I want spark plugs etc how do I know what gap or If I want a part Just saying straight six engine probably wont narrow the results. How would I figure out how many liters or hp the vehicle has. Any way to find this out or know what engine.

If it is a Ford FI straight 6 it would be a 4.9L inline motor from an 87-95 vehicle. The 84 came with a carburated motor. If it's factory FI it will have a rather large box that sits above the valve cover that says Fuel Injected on it. 10w30 should be about right for oil. Plugs should be set at 45-50 but the parts store can tell you for sure. If it is FI then just tell the parts person you need plugs for an 88 4.9L and that should work.

yes it would. But if it has the intake and exhaust on the right side with the intake runners going up to a plenum and TB over the valvecover, with the dist and spark plugs on the left then it's probably a 4.9L FI.
The spark plugs would be on the left If I was In the vehicle but If I was looking at the engine like standing In front of It the spark plugs are on the right. I will get a picture up. But I think Its a 4.9 and It should be a ford motor right because would any other straight six work on this vehicle.

It sure looks like a 84 feedback carb 300 Ford engine. Ford IIRC pretty much skipped the TBI setups and went right to multiport EFI for the 300 in 86 or 87. It is possible someone retrofit a TBI setup but it would also require a different computer and distributer than the feedback system. If you can take some photos with the air cleaner off and a close up of the distributer we might be able to give some more answers. Most carb models have a engine mounted fuel pump.
In any case you should service the engine the same as an 84 300. Many of the carb guys use the slightly longer EFI plugs.

All responses and pictures show its a carbed engine, your original quote was incorrect, it is not fuel injected.
