it all depends on how much you spend i would say its worth it but you have two options for the tranny rebuild it or go to a junk yard and buy one but taking into consideration you dont know the shape of the one in the junk yard

A "like" for "like" tranny swap can be done in an afternoon. The question is, what are you going to have when your done. There are worse potential problems than a bad tranny. do a dry/wet compression test. A brand new tranny out of the box or even a boneyard donor is a waste of time & money if the engine is toast! At 160K, I would expect the worst and hope for the best. So do the test and see what you have. I don't know know how well you know the seller, and you don't know how well he knows the truck. The test will keep the sale safer for you. If it's got a bad top end too, you could end up with a $350. lawn ornament. To recap: Tranny swap, no big thang.Rebuilding the top end,"BIG THANG!" The ideal seller is an ol'fart that lost his license cause he can't see the eye chart anymore, with a drawer full of preventative maintenance receipts!" It will be more than $350, but you have to add up the cost of the whole can of worms, not the first worm that crawls out! If the engines toast, your paying $350 to park a broke down truck in front of "your" house. He's up $350, and saved a tow-away charge.

I am offended. I would never use a Ford as a lawn ornament. I would let it go graciously by having it recycled into other proud owners ford trucks.

You're so right! What was I thinkin! OK, how about if he fills the bed up w/ "good dirt" & plants flowers. Then, in the mean time, he can part the rest of the truck out. He might rack up a few Carbon Credits too! What the heck was my original point? Oh ya, he should do a compression test! To make sure he doesn't end up w/ a mobile flower bed!

Probably too ugly to be a lawn ornament! If he didn't want you to see the outside. What do you think he had hidden inside the engine? Money's worth a lot more than it was just a few years ago. Pick you shot &know what your getting yourself into. My brother bought an 87' 12 years ago when he moved to oregon. It was a 2wd. He was a lift operator on the mountain. It would get him up the mountain almost all the time. "Almost all the time" will get you fired! So he had to buy a 4wd and only used the 2wd in the summer around his property. So I bought it for a little less than what he had in it ($1200). It only had 70k on it. so far I've had to replace the brakes, tie rod, p/s pump tires and did an an ignition upgrade & painted it. No big deal & the truck drives like new (better than new). My point is, that's small stuff needed to keep driving it. at 170k, the list would be a lot longer & more serious($$). So just pick your shot & remember there's alot of trucks out there and what are the chances of one of the first trucks you look at being the best deal for you!
Think of how the guy treated you! Now how do you think he treated his truck? This is what happens when people start skipping their AA (AS*HOLES ANONYMOUS) Meetings!
