The inline 6 requires the special fan clutch wrench.

Learned it from an old mechanic who had several pieces of 1/4 inch paneling that he would use for the same purpose. Just had them slid behind one of his cabinets.

And he said if you want some extra security, two small holes were drilled in the top where you could run some mechanics wire through the core and tie it up to something on the other side.

There are lots of great ideas out there that are slowly disappearing as generations of auto repair people are leaving us.

Isn't that the big wrench that you put across the 4 bolts on the fan?

It's the large skinny wrench that you use to remove the large single nut that holds the fan clutch shaft to the water pump. Some vehicles it's required because a normal wrench won't fit in there but on my '87 I didn't need it. I used channel locks.

Not sure about the V8, I don't have one. From what many have said the V8 has 4 bolts.

Angry New water pump bad too?

Greetings, fellow gear-heads. I have a '97 F-150 4.6L with over 200,000 miles that I'm going to drive until the wheels fall off. Then I'll put them back on and drive it some more. I LOVE my truck! I don't drive it much. Our main ride is my wife's 2003 Expedition.
About a month ago it commenced to making bearing noises and throwing coolant all over the place. I thought, "Crap! Water pump!". I bought a new one (not rebuilt) from Advance and finally installed it today.
I cranked it up and guess what? It was still making the same noises and throwing coolant before it even warmed-up.
What are the odds of that? Did I misdiagnose this issue? I understand that it could be the fan clutch, alternator, power steering pump or whatever, but throwing coolant too?
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Jim from Georgia
