I've only installed HID's on my quad, but not a single problem running them in the halogen housings. My King Quad halogen housings are water tight and the HID's have been there for two years without an issue.

35w will never melt housing. 55w's could depending on set up.

I also don't blame people for going HID. You can get the plug and play kits off eBay, and elsewhere, for same price has high end Philips halogens.

Besides, anything that's not DOT approved or OEM is gonna be illegal. But you pretty much have zero chance of a cop bothering you for unless you are being stopped for something else (speeding/stop sign/etc) or if they are aimed like ***.

EDIT - Sorry J-Code, I was typing this up while you were pointing out that it is illegal. Hate when somebody beats me to it. LOL
Not to be argumentative, just so you know........
Technically, unless the HID's are marked and approved by Mississippi, they are illegal.

TITLE 63. MOTOR VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC REGULATIONS
CHAPTER 7. EQUIPMENT AND IDENTIFICATION
GENERAL PROVISIONS

Miss. Code Ann. § 63-7-41 (2011)

§ 63-7-41. Sale, use, etc., of lamps modifying original design or performance of vehicle

No person shall have for sale, sell or offer for sale for use upon or as a part of the equipment of a motor vehicle, trailer or semitrailer or use upon any such vehicle any head lamp, auxiliary driving lamp, rear lamp, signal lamp or reflector which reflector is required hereunder, or parts of any of the foregoing, which tend to change the original design or performance, unless of a type which has been submitted to the department of public safety and approved by it.

No person shall have for sale, sell or offer for sale for use upon or as part of the equipment of a motor vehicle, trailer or semitrailer any lamp or device mentioned in this section which has been approved by the department unless such lamp or device bears thereon the trademark or name under which it is approved so as to be legible when installed.

No person shall use upon any motor vehicle, trailer or semitrailer any lamps mentioned in this section unless said lamps are mounted, adjusted and aimed in accordance with instructions of the department.

I want to say Michigan just sum's it up basically saying not DOT stamp, not road legal. When it comes down to it though, they tend not care around here. Plenty of HID plug n play kits. Even had seen HID 6" fogs on pointing straight out by some asshat. Those things pointed right through the back of car windows. Somehow he was running around for atleast a week with them, saw him every couple nights and those things were always on. Also seen some Excursion with factory lights and fogs on with 3000k hid's on. Technically, only 4 forward facing lights on at once, but seen him with those on for a good year now. We also don't have any sort of inspections.

If it comes down to it, really if your light's are aimed properly, you tend not to get bothered. This is far as I can tell though, I've never owned HIDs nor had any more than factory head lights and fog lights on.

I got to looking at my truck this morning and have it pretty much blacked out and think the headlight tint would be pretty cool. As far as HID's, I travel through a dozen or more towns on my trip to work and really want HID's on my truck, but I think I'm going to go another route with the HID's. I'm thinking about a pair of the 6", $30 Off Road Lights that Wally World sells. They come with an replaceable H3 bulb. When money allows, I'm going to pick up the lights and the Xentec H3 HID kit off of ebay for $32. A total investment of $62 and change. I've been running these HID's from ebay for 2 years now with zero failures on my ATV and had them submerged, frozen, and run all night with 100 degree summer temps and they get beat to death on the trail. Too many small towns to get popped by small town police to run them all of the time and too many hogs and deer crossing the roads not to have HID's. I can wire up a switch on the dash and use them as I would my high beams. Cut them off when I approach a car or when one approaches me. Mounted to the front bumper and aimed slightly downward, they should be good to go if only run when needed.

And you can not run HIDs in Halogen housings. You need projectors for HIDs
I have HIDs in my headlights...

And they've saved my *** from multiple deer.

And I have a projector fund too, because there is some glare to them...
