Well my bad, did older ones take gear oil? My 92 leaks, sure smells like gear oil, buddy of mine told me it is gear oil, haven't checked or filled it yet. I hope it doesn't have the wrong stuff in it, gear oil has a very distinctive smell

I think at one time they did. The big ol 70s strike pickups and broncos. But your 92 shouldn't

Huh, well I guess it needs a fluid change now just because I don't know what's in it

One of the best ways I know to remember is if it's a steel case it takes gear oil. Aluminum case, ATF ..

thats not true, my np208 takes 80w90 and it is an aluminum case, about the only "steel" case transfer is the np205, it is cast iron. also the bw1356 in the gas powered trucks are made out of magnesium not aluminum(in the diesel trucks half of the case is aluminum the other half is magnesium.)

could be a number of reasons they switched to atf, weaker cheaper oil pumps, ***slicker/thinner oils provide better fuel economy***, heck newer trucks take a special transfer case oil, and if you use something else you will destroy the transfer.
