Towing issues
I have a 94 F150 4x4. Just bought a new boat and towed it home. It seems to be little soft in rear suspension but I just did a over haul on that! Anyone have any input on adding a leaf as to going to air shocks? Only a problem in harder turns and groved roads. frontend wants to push.
Rancho or superlift makes add a leafs, I just put a set into my 92 F150, there are 2 types, a long and a short, long springs give a softer ride, the short makes it a little stiffer. They will give more of a weight capacity. The only 2 drawbacks with Fords that I have found, leaf springs and gas tanks always rot out. I have had 5 pickups, and always added leafs or a tank or two. As far as airshocks, I would trust the springs.
Yes I know where you are coming from! Just replaced the hangers and shackles! Got a good set of leaf springs from salavage yard. And already went through the patching of front tank to! I was leaning towards the add a leaf. Thanks for your input!
Ya I need a couple of hangers myself, they are almost gone, I would look into add a leafs, about 120.00 for a set, maybe less depends where u buy them, you will need new u-bolts, probably 10-1\2x3"x9\16 thread, I just added a set to my truck, the short ones, the u-bolts are about 40.00 set of four. I got about 1-1\2 or so in the back and it stiffened it up pretty good with good drivability.
Make sure you check napa and advance auto for your hangers and shackles! I bought mine from ford and found out they where avaliable at the stores after everyone said dealer only! almost 1/2 the cost at stores!
Auto Zone has a universal helper spring set. They just bolt on the back half of the leaf springs. You can also put a set on the front half if you need it. The only bad thing was is that the kit comes with u-bolts that are too small. On my 1990 F-150 4x4 I needed ones that are 3 1/8 inch wide so I made my own. It works great. It also lifted my back a little.

If you want to save the empty ride while helping with loaded sag you could check on airbags. Air shock are ok for light loads, while heavier loads will continue to bottom them out as there is not enough surface area to help increase much load. Air shocks also will stress the shock mounts, not really a problem for the enclosed lower mount but can cause problems with the single side mount on top.
