Default Timing and HP

So I know you can adjust the timing to get more hp but just how much can you get out of a stock 5.8l? I've done it on 5.0l mustangs before and could tell a slight gain but don't no any numbers. I'm trying to decided if it's worth it on this truck to bump the timing and need to buy premium.

i've heard it's best to leave a 5.8 at factory timing because it pings when it's advanced

If you run it on regular then yes it will, the 5.0 does the same thing, that's why if you advance the timing you need to run premium fuel.

The pinging is actually pre ignition detonation and the higher octane rating of premium fuel can keep this from happening. Higher compression can also cause this and without the better fuel per ignition detonation can spell doom for you engine. I've seen someone push the timing too far on regular fuel and when we pulled the plugs you could see little ***** of metal on them from the pistons melting.

I wouldn't do it, you may see a little gain and a little better fuel economy but I've also heard of a lot of people having issues with other sensors and burning through coils. Also the extra cost of the premium will pretty much negate any mpg gain. If you really want some added HP, as well as a slight mpg bump, do the e-fan conversion. Just pull a fan from a sedan and throw out that mechanical fan. I noticed a difference in take off, as well as it's much quieter when running, threw in a 130 amp alt and I don't can't even tell when the fan kicks on. Also keep fresh plugs in it, these things supposedly like all copper better so just switch them out every 10k miles.

^^X2^^
Minimum 15-20hp gain. (Regained) Very inexpensive mod. Used Chrysler or Ford Taurus Type electric fans, ours start at about $24@pair, $18 fan controller, some wiring and relays and enjoy the gains.

I'm already planning on swapping the fan out, I've already done this mod on a few fox body mustangs and an 89 bronco so I know the benefit. What I've also done on all these vehicles is adjusted the timing and I've never had an issue with it if better fuel was used. And just out of curiosity how does adjusting the timing a little burn out a coil?

Usually the timing bump is done in conjunction with a hotter coil. Unfortunately the quality can be hit or miss with these coils, they don't match up to oem quality for sure.

I've used MSD coils many times with no issues and have already installed one on this truck.
