Timing bump
...and good things will come to you! It's the only mod I know of that improves MPG & performance.
Goodmorning Iksmith
Do I sense "Dutch blood" in you? "Don't wanna buy; Can I borrow?"
Be clever; buy that timing light; you'll have it for the rest of your life and is usefull on other cars as well.
If you are handy with it, you can adjust cars from neighbours as well if ,they like; if they pay for you action, you make money
Now , does that sounds Dutch?
best regards Ton

If you just "updated" w/ the same stock grade of parts, improvement would only increase dependent on how bad the condition was of the part being replaced.
"Upgrading" would be a 48K low ohm coil (to allow you to increase your plug gap size by 15-20%/ providing a more complete & efficient firing), a brass cap & roter (because a 48K coil will eat a stock set) & spiral core wires (to insure spark pulse makes it to the plugs uninterrupted), yes you would see an improvement.
Then when you do the bump, that's icing on the cake...& the icing is good! Read Link 2, I posted earlier.
Your compression has quite a bit to do w/ what you can expect. To see improvement from the upgrade & bump though, your compression doesn't have to be outstanding, but should be relatively balanced. If your seeing 100 or 135 psi, you will see improvement, but not as much as if you have 180 psi (talking stock 302).
You should be able to do the "upgrade" using the parts listed on Link 1, for well under $200.

I just got under & held a piece of emery cloth against the pulley at a slow idle. A more sane person would just have someone bump the starter, till the marks were accessible. Then mark "0" TDC, "10" BTDC (Factory) & what your target setting is, w/ a Whiteout correction pen.

Anything between 11-16, whatever I can get it to before it pings/misfires. I tried to do it by ear, but just ended up putting it back to where the old mark was on the distributor before I turned it.
