an update on the ticking noise...
I'm now more of the opinion that it is caused by excessive valve play rather than an exhaust leak. I've been reading up on the procedure to adjust that... seems the only way is to get a feeler gauge in there between the rocker arm and the valve stem (are those the correct names?) and if the clearance is out of spec, replace the pushrod
seems like a lot of trouble to me

Mines got that tick tick noise, don't hear it when it idles but when you step on it you can hear it loud and clear. Although mines just an exhaust leak and i'm hoping to put a new gasket in this week.

i have this noise as well. installed new gaskets between the manifolds and heads. still have the noise
im going to try realigning the Y-pipe back to the manifolds. other than that, I'd like to know what causes this. My sister had a Volvo with the same noise... hmmmmm

I'm very disinclined to believe the hydraulic lifters have infinite capacity for correcting excessive clearance in the valve stem and rocker arm. surely there must be a limit to how much they can do. could there not also be a buildup of crud around the valve preventing it from closing it all the way?

My expertise however, is not internal engine. So I defer to "dr Bowtie", "JCMS", or any other of the members who has seen this particular movie before.
But "tick-tick" culprit #1 w/ these beast's. Exhaust/ Exhaust manifold related.
if the valve doesn't close all the way, there will be extra space between the valve stem and the rocker arm. so when the rocker arm comes down to open the valve, it'll travel for a bit before it hits the end of the valve stem and will emit a tapping sound when it makes contact. that's my very basic understanding of it anyway

The Seafoam in oil treatment pretty much took "blocked oil passage" off the table.
