Not sure about the 300, but the 302 gauge unit is near the thermostat outlet - a one-wire job. The computer unit is somewhat larger and located towards the back. Just look for a sensor that would be in the coolant passage-way.

Gauge- passenger side of the block towards the rear high up near the head.

Computer- thermostat housing threaded fitting in the steel hose.

Default 1987 F-150 4.9L / 300ci Temperature Sending Unit location

1987 F-150 4.9L

Picture of one of the Temperature Sending Units on my 87

and

behind Alternator, there is something similar to a Temperature Sending Unit,
I am not sure what it is though!

Sean has a 300ci also; so he knows where the other one is located.

So I'm also looking for some info. I have an 88 4.9L, 5spd 4x4. I recently did a lot of maintenance on it including lifters and push rods (all 12 lifters seized up) and the rear main seal. It seems there is some sort of sensor/valve under the intake manifold located by cylinder 1/2 with a single red wire coming out of the top aimed towards the rear of the block. Ive been told this is a coolant temperature sensor, which could explain my issue. Im not sure where the red wire is supposed to be connected to, its still attached at the sensor under the manifold but the other end isn't attached anywhere. Right now my coolant gauge is pegged high when I try to drive the thing and Im just worried that it might not be cooling the engine properly. I dont have much experience with this engine so I'm not sure where or what this sensor plays in to. Any help is appreciated!

That red line is a vacuum line connected to your fuel pressure regulator and has nothing to do with your temp. gauge. The temperature gauge sender is on the passenger side of the engine, above the starter and below the head with a single wire plugged to it..
