You shouldn't assume anything. Check for codes.

The ECT sensor always tells on itself during an E/C scan, if it's pooched.https://www.f150forum.com/f10/how-re...es-obdi-10907/ or http://www.handsontools.com/Equus-In...ol_p_5574.html

ok pulled codes, temp sensor does not read bad. Checked guage and it seems to work.

another symptom to add is now my heat does not get hot. It seems to warm up alittle but never gets really warm even when the temp guage reads at the top of the normal range.

Either your heater core is clogged or you have air trapped in the loop. The later could cause the ECT to make the ECU to fall in & out of closed loop function (fuel trim).

Hmmm, if it is air in the system how do i clear that. Also how can i check to see if heater core is clogged and would either of these cause the the temp guage to ride on the high side.

It goes up whether i have the heater on or not. Again the faster i go the higher the temp goes. when i come to a stop at a light it has a noticable drop in the guage then as i drive it goes back up to the top line of the Normal range.

I will be flushing the radiator and replacing the thermostat this weekend i hope for good weather.

Take off the H/C hoses and flush them both directions w the temp set on high. reconnect them. Remove the radiator cap, start the engine and keep top off the radiator til it reaches normal operating temp & the air bubbles subside. Fill the overflow to proper level. If you have overheated multiple times or drastically, the thermostat, may have been compromised. If you replace it, I like the 180F personally. You got no codes at all?
