temp gauge...temp sensor problem??
my temp gauge in my 1992 ford f150 2wd 4.9 5 speed is not working...
it does not go up to the "NORMAL" range and it sits right above the C
im thinking the temp sensor is not working and i am thinking about replacing it...
before i go on..i have searched many threads on here and i still cant find the answer to this question...so i am now asking for some help...
im thinking my sensor is dead and want to replace it its only like 25$ but i dont want to spend on it if its not that...
thanks for your help

Its not the temp sensor that works the gauge it's the temp switch or some call it a sending unit. Its the one wire unit on the side of the engine not the two wire one by the thermostat that's the sensor.
55: has taking it out and cleaning it up worked for the gauge to function? has having it dirty made the gauge not function?..thanks
hawk: so your saying i should check the "sending unit" is that the one thats about 2" maybe 3" back and to the left of where the temp sensor is...thanks

$25???? It should be about $10 at the most and you should be able to replace it easily by yourself without creating a mess if your $25 is including someone's labor. You can get one from Napa for about $6 if my memory serves me correctly.
Also, are you aware that there are 2 different temperature sensors? One to send the computer a signal and one to control the gauge.

Put an analog guage they work better. thats what i did and it has help me keep a better idea of the working condition of my 87 f150. id also did the oil guage and soon after when my oil pump went out i knew before it could kill my motor. New oil pump is in and truck is running fine!
