Default tachometer problems

These past few cold days my tach has been acting funny...the first 3 or so minutes of driving it doesn't work...then all of a sudden I look down and its fine... I haven't diagnosed the problem yet, I figured I'd post here before I look at it tomorrow........

What crap? There isn't much to the tach, just the tach and the wire to the coil.

My wiring diagrams don't show the tach, but it hooks to the negative side of the coil. The rest of the tach wiring is all at the cluster. The coil wire gives the tach the signal.

Don't feel bad, I just looked at mine to find it but couldn't. It looks like the tach gets its signal from the ICM, which is the same thing. The ICM gives the coil the negative signal so the connection is there instead of at the coil.

I didn't really have a good suggestion for you. I'm not sure why it would only screw up for a little bit. If it were me, I'd start under the hood. Since mine looks like it gets the signal from the ICM I'd make sure that plug is good, getting good contact, and none of the wires are broken, melted, or getting ready to break. Then I'd move on to the cluster. Unfortunately it sounds to me like the tach itself is going bad. I can't remember if you can change the tach easily.
