Default Tachometer?

I have purchased a '96 F150 2WD with a 4.9 liter L6 and 5 speed manual tranny.I would like to put an aftermarket tachometer in this truck, is this possible or am I going to have to find a factory gauge cluster with a tachometer in it and switch the whole cluster out? Thanks in advance for the input!

I can't help you in anyway but i got a '88 same engine and everything as yours and i wanted to know also because i want a tach. I am sure there is a way to do it, but i am not sure exactly how to. Did the aftermarket tach come with any wires or a diagram or something? Because i think if you get a factory gauge cluster your still not going to have the wires ran to where ever they go. -shawn

You can install an aftermarket tach with no problem. Contact Jegs, Summit tellthem the year make and model and they can send you a tach with the directions to attach it to your distributorless system.

Yours is EASY to do. Buy any tach you want and it will have directions to hook it up to the coil. Matter of fact I have an APC tach NIB with a shift light for sale for 50 bucks.

Thanks for all the comments and input! My '96 has a distributor and external coil, but the coil has a plug in for wiring whereas the older system has individual wires. I am much more familiar with the older system. I will contact some parts catalogues and see what I can find and keep you all posted of the results. Thanks again for the help!

I missed the l6 part.. DUH. Any tach will work just fine then. It ties in on the negative side of the coil. Make sure to set the tach for a 6 cyl.

winall941...Welcome to our site! I am not familiar with your model year, but if you re-post your question in the 1997-2003 F150 forum you will probably get the answer to your question.
