Assuming this is an automatic, first suggestion would be to check the fluid - both for proper level and for condition.
If it's closer to brown than to cherry red - might consider a fluid and filter change.

I sounds like the transmission is almost at the end. Be sure to do what wde3477 says you might just get lucky, I took a look online and there are a lot of transmissions to be had for your truck, I think it is an E4OD It looks like you have a wide choice for roughly 800 dollars these come with a warranty. The one thing you are going to have to decide is this truck is worth fixing. I happen to think the 9th generation Ford F150 (1991 - 1996) is just about the best looking of the line. There are thousands of them for sale. You can pick up a real nice one for about the price of paying somebody to rebuild the transmission in your present truck. As much as I like the small block Ford V8's a primo everyday driver would be a F150, 2 or 4 wheel drive, 5 speed standard transmission, with the 300/4.9L 6 cylinder. I would shoot for a 1996 model this is the last year for the the 5.0. 5.4, V8's and 4.9L I6 engines. They have the OBDII sensors, and a better fuel injection system then the 1992.

Well I had a 2000 f150 we put a new motor in it and rebuilt the trany and I gave it to my younger brother and he put water in it instead of colant and cracked the block so I'm stayin away from the 5.4s for a while cause it was nothin but trouble and I will probably get this on rebuilt when taxes come back I think personally in my opinion my 92' looks better than my 00' I do miss the power of the 5.4 compared to the 5.0
I'd check level & condition of fluid, as mentioned, & toss in a can of "Transtune". See if you get any improvement after 50 or so miles. It opens fluid ports & improves tranny cooler function. It obviously won't cure a tranny near catastrophic failure or cause components to return to proper tolerances, but if improvement is noticed, that would lend itself to an argument that it may in fact possibly be a fluid condition related problem.
May be a "hail Mary", but that's what it kinda sounds like all you have left. If there is a noticeable improvement, then go w/ a fluid change. The Transtune will have prepped it for the change by dissolving sludge & varnish.
