Default Shifter boot replacement

I have an 89 F150 4x4 302 5-spd that mice have ate a hole through my shifter boot. It took forever to find a good replacement, but now I need to know how to get the lever disassembled so I can get the new one installed without damaging it. It is the normal straight shift lever that flares out to the larger diameter at the bottom, right above the top of the boot. Thanks in advance for the help.

Take the nut off the one side and tighten it on the other side. It will pull the shaft out and you can remove the shifter.
