Default rusty ol 89 alternator problem

OK, my buddy who sold me this truck is somewhat of an idiot. He needed to replace the alternator so he went to the junk yard a pulled one out if a Chevy! Long story short, I dont know which alternator I need, since I apparently have options. Its an 89 lariat XLT with the 302. He says it needs one with the double plug, or whatever, and the truck has A/C, Factory dual fuel tanks, standard cab, standard bed, 4X4, ect... Any help?

otherwise, you could go to the salvage yard and see what is on other 89 F150's for reference.

Good luck!

well, that link just confirms that I have a lot of options, since I've already shopped around online for answered. And I dont really need to know what's in other trucks. I'm trying to figure out what I need in mine.

What options are you having trouble with? Go to the parts store and tell them the truck, engine, etc and buy that alternator, it will bolt on. As far as the output of the alternator just get the highest. It won't overcharge, it's internally regulated.

The amperage is different on all if them. So, your saying just go with the highest amperage, but its 3x more than the lowest for a remaned one. I only paid 650 for the truck, and I dont want want stick loads of cash into it. I'm barely ever gonna drive it either. She's in rough shape.

Internally or externally regulated and 2 o'clock or 10 o'clock plug?

Internally regulated, I don't know the clocking but you can change it by removing the case bolts and rotating the case, you can't lose. Buy the cheap one or get one from the junkyard, but the more options and add ons you have (ie. pw, pdl, fogs, booming stereo, etc.) the better off you will be with a higher amperage alt. You may have only paid $650 for the truck but if you want it to last and want it to work well then overkill is good.

I talked to Ford and they recommended staying over 60 amps, so ill go for 75.

So, today I replaced the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, and i tore apart the airbox and intake tube and cleaned them. The box and filter were covered in oil. Pretty nasty. There were a couple factory holes and a couple other holes, so I covered all of them with speed tape. The intake tubes were full of dirt so I cleaned the crap outta them. I cleaned the throttle body. I changed the oil, looked pretty filthy and couple quarts low. Added coolant since it was almost empty. topped her off with dot 3. Ran a switch from the inertia switch so I can manually turn off the fuel pumps, quick ghetto rig to a complicated problem. And last but not least, I replaced a window crank handle. Its a night and day difference, she runs so smooth.
