I removed one on a 92. Just needed a shorter serpentine belt. It worked fine. The air pump is for emissions. It increases the volume of air in the exhaust which lowers the percentage of unburnt gas. Simple analogy, if you have 5 parts air and 5 parts unburnt gas you have 50% unburnt gas. You add 5 more parts air, suddenly you only have 33% unburnt gas. Bulls$&t way to easily meet emission standards.

Is there a performance benefit to it?

Will the computer freak out?

and

Can you leave all the parts on and just run the shorter belt bypassing it?

edit: will it ruin my cats?

That is not how a smog pump works. It's funny that people actually believe that.

It will not pass inspection, if you have inspections you will not be allowed to drive it on public roads. It is not good for the cat, the cat should be hollowed out. The control solenoids must be left in place so the check engine light doesn't come on, you can cap vacuum out.

I agree with almost everything Sean said. I will even concede that the air pumps stated purpose is to aid in combustion of unburnt gasses in the catalytic. However i know a little about catalytic converters. They have been around for years and work fine without adding extra air. They burn the gasses off by getting hot. They work better closer to the motor where the exhaust gasses are hotter. Adding extra cool air reduces there efficiency and reduces the ppm of unburnt gasses. There would be no less unburnt gas in a vehicle without a air pump and a catalytic than one with an air pump and catalytic. Just a higher percentage of unburnt gas compared to air because your adding air and diluting it. Maybe I am delusional but that's what I believe.

The extra oxygenated air aids in the combustion of unburned fuel.

That's the stated purpose. However the pump only adds air to the exhaust when the engine is cold. It stops adding air when the vehicle is warm. So how can adding air to a cold catalytic help it burn off unburnt fuel? It doesn't, it just dilutes it. Also how come older cars without smog pumps still have catalytic converters that work!

It sounds like you've convinced yourself that you're right.
