Default Rear Main

Alright, after replacing valve covers and intake manifold gaskets last week, and the truck still pissing oil like an excited puppy, ive decided that its time to tackle the Rear Main Oil Seal. I was looking for advice form you guys as to what I need to be prepared for. Its a 302 with an AOD tranny. So a few questions.
1. Do I actually need to drain the transmission, since its not being removed fully, I only plan on moving it far enough to work on the seal.
2. Along those same lines, what is necessary to remove form the tranny? The Driveshaft, starter, TV, speedo, any of this?
3. Does the torque converter have to be remoed, or can the transmission stay sealed up, im not completely familiar with the drive plate and all of that, and what holds what fluid.

Thanks guys, I know someone here has done it, and will have a bit of experience to share.

Default main seal

ok, remove
starter

driveline, install or cover tailshaft with bag after drainig fluid into pan.

trany line from tranny and cover with plastic bags, plug tranny inlet fittings,

remove converter nuts (4)

remove trany mount

disconnect tranny linkage (slide tranny back as far as it'll go)

remove flywheel

drail oil

drop oil pan

remove rear main cap

remove rear oil seal from lower part of cap

***** if there is a pin above the oil seal(top side... look at the new one and see if there is a hole for it) you either need to knock out the pin... or lower the crank( by taking off all the main caps) to slide the new seal in the correct way. MAKE SURE THAT THE SEAL THAT RIDES ON THE CRANK IS FACING THIS WAY \l SO THE OIL IS KEPT IN AND NOT BLOWN OUT

after being replaced put a dab of black rtv at the ends of the seals then install the rear cap again (put a light coat of lube on the seal so it's not a dry start on the seal)

now reinstall all the stuff back again.

You don't have to drain the oil, drop the oil pan, or remove the rear main cap. This procedure is for engines with two piece rear main seals. Your truck has a one piece seal, so it's just like changing the front seal. Pull the old one out and tap the new one in. If you had a two piece seal you wouldn't have to remove the transmission. It will be a lot easier to drop the tranny all the way out so you have room to work. You can leave the torque converter in the tranny but don't let it come crashing down on you. Also make sure it's still fully seated in the tranny when you put it back in.

Default there ya go

well there ya go a fix for both motors incase someone changed yours, lol
I kept my converter in the tranny too, but tied a rope around the holes and the nub of the converter to keep it there and seated.

Alright, Mine is Seans answer, it a good ol original 1990 302 haha, ok well good taht the oil pan is not going to be involved, but im gonna drain the oil anyway since its due for a change, so I take it im gonna lose the transmission fluid out of the rear of the transmission whem I pull that driveshaft? Cuz I just serviced the transmission less than 6,000 miles ago ,I really hate to waste al ltaht fluid, I gues I can try to cach the most of it. Well thanks you two, I hope to the good lord the truck drives again after I get done with this haha.

ok update... bad update. Ok Well I got half way through the project to the point that the driveshaft and starter were off and the bolts were all out of the tranny, and I had pulled one bolt out of the flywheel. Then chickened out and got pissed off and puteverything back together. Figured Id save it summer. Anyway, bad gets worse, I was driving the truck down the road and apparently I screwed up. Next Thing I knew my driveshaft was no longer attatched to my rear end.... So... Im praying the U joint and/or driveshaft is completely effed up.. I know the dust caps came off the ujoint and im sure whatever bearings is in them are gone, but ill survey the damage in the morning... Wish me luck.

Have a little more confidence in yourself. You were almost done and then put it back together. The hardest part of the whole thing is removing the transmission. The rear seal is easier to change than the front one because it's so big. Oh yea, good luck.

Thanks guys, just for reference tommorow, and to keep this from happening again, what do I need to play careful attention to at the drive shaft to rear end yoke attatchment, mine has U-Bolts that come down over the dust caps, I had it lined up pretty decent I think and the bolts on TIGHT, so Idk what gives, and also, how am I gonna line that bad boy back up now that I dont have markings to go by to get it back in balance.
