The parts for a '95 will work on your '96. The problem you are having is that '96 is the only year of this body style that is OBDII instead of OBDI like the rest. The performance parts manufacturers didn't have the parts smog certified for '96 vehicles, but they will bolt on.

You can use the parts. With the headers the only problem I forsee is that you may have to have an oxygen sensor bung welded on because the '96 has one on each side and one behind the catalytic converter, but that is only if the sensor is in the manifold instead of the exhaust pipe.
The reason it is different is because in 1996 the computer was switched to obdII. Im not sure why the headers would be different, there is probably more sensors or something. summit and jegs both carry parts for the 96's. One good upgrade that you can do to the 1996 that can not be done to any other 8th gen f150 is a programmer that you can plug into your obdII port and tune your truck very simply by yourself. I believe jet and sct make these programmers. They should be good for about 20hp and they cost around $300. I also believe i have seen shorty headers for these trucks for about $300.I would also reccommend a free flowing exhaust, and some sort of intake system upgrade such as a k&n drop in filter, CAI's(cold air intakes) aren't really worth the extra money for these trucks.
