All depends on what year you have. If your truck has map a programmer/chip won't do anything at all. If your truck has maf it will help a little and I mean very little. Better off putting your money in to other upgrades.

Is there any way to take the speed limiter off without one? Not that you need to do over 100mph in a pickup, but would be nice to know I could without it cutting out.

Most OBII programmers have that ability, not sure on OBI flipchips.

I have one on my 1996 f150 4.9. When I first put it on I didn't think that it helped, then I took it off and realized it helped a great deal. It is a Hypertech and I paid $120 for it on eBay. IMHO it was worth it, i don't know about $300 for one though... But my truck is a manual, so I could only program the engine. If you have an auto, you can program the shift points and shift firmness. Btw with mine you can't change sped limiters but I don't think my truck has one?
