Default Ocationally stalls when shifting to reverse or forward

Occasionally stalls when shifting to reverse or forward - like when jockeying into a parking space. Runs fine otherwise. Does not stall when coming to a stop or idling.

1991 F150 with 6 cylinder engine, auto transmission - about 125k miles on the clock.

Thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

1. Does it stall when you shift it into reverse but if you give it gass and then shift it goes without stalling?
2. Is it an E4OD tranny?

If it stalls when shifting into reverse but you can run it kinda like a standard holding the brake and the gass then shifting into gear i have some bad news. My 1990 5.0l E4OD started doing that and it turned out to be the tranny pump. It Needed a new tranny. I drove it like that as long as I could then one day it gave up the ghost and I had to buy a replacement tranny. And the second one started to fail the exact same way. That one was a reman and it only lasted about 18 months; Just long enough to make it past waranty. Hope this is not your problem.

My manuals have really detailed diagnostic procedures for the C6 ( I had to fool with one once ) I'm not sure if they're as good for the E4OD 4 sp... At any rate if I remember it's pretty involved and requires a vacuum gauge, maybe more. I can check tomorrow night when I'm home - PM me if I forget and you're still having problems.

How fresh is your fluid, what type of fluid, also have you checked your fluid level recently? Sounds sorta like low fluid could be an issue.

The filter will also fall into the pan, causing this issue. There's a clip kit you can buy to better hold the filter in place and solve the falling out problem

Do you mind posting a link to that if you can locate it? I've seen it somewhere but forgot where I found it. I have to pull my pan off in a week or so to replace a part that broke and wouldn't mind including that with my job.

Thanks for all the replies.

Fluid is fresh - was changed a few months ago when a torque converter was replaced. Fluid level is ok. Have driven the truck a couple times since this post without the prob. occurring - to include several stops and parking lot forward/reverse cycles today. Go figure.

Will continue to monitor and see what develops and watch then for more of the behavior.
