What happened to my trans. On the way to work before i even got the the end of my rd i started shifting down from 5th and when i got going again i could not get it to go in 5th. So i drove all the way to work with no 5th and found out i also have no reverse. I can shift into reverse but when i let off the clutch it grinds and pops out. If i try to hold it in it will back up a little then really grinds and forces itself back out. What happened. 88 bronco btw 5spd 302

I am noooo trans expert but. Drop the pan. If you have a bunch of metal then well.... Trans is done. If it's clean you may just have worn / bent shift forks or linkage which I believe can be changed from the top inside the cab. I could be totally wrong but dropping the pan is a good place to start.

Don't feel bad, I didn't even think about it either when I read your suggestion.

But to the OP, I agree on looking at the fluid. It could help you get a better idea.

No prob. You made me read twice when you said "pan". Lol. I'd suggest more than straining the fluid. Get a fluid pump for a quart bottle. Drain and strain the trans fluid completely and then pump some 5w 30 through the fill hole with the drain plug removed and see what you can flush out. A small magnet epoxied to a coat hanger to bend and fish around through the drain hole will help too. I had a cylindrical bearing come out of the drain hole at the last fluid change. No one was able to tell me where it came from. I guess I'll figure it out sometime in the next 100k miles. Lol.

Well so far what i dont was take off the floor plate and take the top cover off. Found my problem i believe. The 5th and reverse shift rail will only move about a 1/4 inch so something is stuck or bent. Gears all look good. But i have a 95 f150 5spd i took the top cover off that and it slides nicely so im gonna put that one on and hope that is my problem which i think it is. As soon as i get new rubber plugs and rubber gasket anyway. Fluid obviously still nice an bright red because its only got 75 miles but i wonder how much filings are on the drain plug magnet.

Ok so i put the other top cover from the good trans and it does the same exact thing. What else could cause this.
