Default New Person, probably old problem-Map Sensor

Hello, I am new to the forum but need some help. My truck is a 1994 Ford F150 with a 6 cylinder engine. It will not start until I spray some starting fluid and then it starts just fine. When the map sensor is unplugged it runs fine, when plugged in it will hardly stay running. I just bought the truck and the guy that I bought it from says that the Map sensor needs to be replaced and that is why it will not start without being being primed with starter fluid..

Does this sound correct and will it solve the problem if I replace the Map sensor.

Thanks,

Gary

Sure sounds like a pooched MAP, but Error codes scans would help confirm it. This is one of the first things you should get for your truck. You can find these Code readers around town by calling or order online: http://www.handsontools.com/Equus-In...ol_p_5574.html (this is the only brand/model in this price range that works great. Don't buy any other unless you want to go up a couple hundred in price) You could do the scans manually. Good luck w/ that: https://www.f150forum.com/f10/how-re...es-obdi-10907/ Here's some info on MAP's: http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=27

Default Thank you

I guess I will replace the Map sensor and get a code reader pretty soon.

Also, can someone tell me how to get to the front/back fuel tank switch? Mine has fallen back into the dash and I cannot figure out how to remove the plastic dash cover to get to it.

Also, the needle that indicates when the transmission is in what ever gear does not move when shifter is positioned, how do I get to that???

Thank you in advance for your help and advice, I will be back again and again...

Default Primed

Forgot to answer, yes, the vehicle does start ok and run after being primed...Shakes and lurch for a few minutes and then smooths out most of the time.

Default cover

Sorry i dont have pic. from other side. there is one bolt on each side , u have to remove the gray cover to get to the bolts then just pull it carefully its has 3 or 4 clips on top. think u have to remove the bottom too.

For the gear indicator there is a small withe tube with wire inside , its connected fro shifter to gear indicator niddle. make sure it not broken. or lose.

I purchased a code reader today along with a Map sensor, the code reader does not do anything with the Map Sensor lugged in, when I unplug the Map sensor, the code reader does start flashing but the flashes made no sense.

I did replace the old Map sensor with a new one, it made no difference. The truck will run when the new sensor is plugged in but idles very rough and when you try to give the truck some gas and speed up, it sputters and then dies.

With the sensor unplugged, the truck runs better but seems to hesitate for a second or two before starting to gain some speed. It does idle much better when the sensor is unplugged.

The check engine stays on either way, unplugged or plugged???

If you can't get codes out of it then the computer is most likely fried.

Try unplugging the Trucks battery for 5 minutes. What code reader, this one? http://www.handsontools.com/Equus-In...ol_p_5574.html
