I'm taking a look at a 302 rebuilt with 2000 miles on it. Owner had it in a 96 and blew the trans. Has TFS1 cam, GT40p heads, FR shorty headers and complete intake/accessories attached. Pretty much turn key with a bit of work. $750.
Anyone have experience with drivability with this cam, it gets lots of comparisons to a FR B cam so it must be similar?
Price seem fair if it is what seller says it is?
PS. Truck it would go in has MAF and is automatic with 4.10'a, 2wd.

Sounds like a great deal to me. I was thinking of running this cam one day as well because the idle lope sounds killer. I'd imagine it'd be a bit soft on the bottom end might need a higher stall speed converter.

If I do go this route I'd freshen up the 4R70W at the same time, I think you're right about the convertor with that cam.

I wanted to go with a 3000 rpm converter myself, I have 4.10's as well that should help the low end too.

Get a custom cam. You can still have that killer idle and low end. You'd have to go Mass Air with either cam, though.

Checked the engine out this afternoon. Turns out I'm familiar with the shop that did the machine work. Engine came out of a Mountaneer. The owner did the assembly and he was honest in the fact the the cam choice wasn't really incorporated into the rebuild of the heads. Meaning the springs are for a stock cam not the TFS1 cam. Overall seems like a great deal for $750.

I will get it unloaded Monday and dig deeper to see what I bought. The headers are the tell all sign, they are brand new just with bungs added for O2 sensors. I'll for sure install some new gaskets as the PO used the cork valve cover gaskets included in the Felpro set.

The PO had installed the TFS1 cam in this engine. After looking at the specs and doing some research I'm sure that cam won't work for me. I'd really thought of just throwing the stock cam back in, but that's kinda lame and boring.

What I've come up with is the Compcam XE258HR-14. Any one have some experience with this cam? By the specs it should keep the power down low, maybe keep some power up to 5000 rpm where the oem cam would be done already.

I have the XE258HR-14 in my truck. As far as I'm concerned, it's a good cam. Has a slight lope with the idle. I didn't think anyone would notice it, but even with my quiet exhaust, it's noticeable to someone that knows cars. In my opinion, it does well. Especially midrange, it pulls like a freight train. At 70mph, the engine does not have that labored sound like it did with the stock cam. It pulls with minimal effort.

For what it's worth, from stoplight to stoplight, I have embarrassed a BMW before (don't remember the model) so it pulls pretty good.
