hello all,

im having a problem with my ignition. i can turn the key all the way and it wont start, it seems when i turn it to the acc nothing happens but when i turn it all the way the lights and everything comes on but it doesnt start. i can also pull the key out without pushing the key realise, does this have something to do with it? i seached a bit but im not sure what the problem is yet..im also thinking it could be the ignition rod??

my dad picked up a new key ignition but i dont see how just changing that will solve my problem. any help would be appricated! thanks

its a 1990 f-150 5 speed, 4 wheels drive

 

Pull the key out without hitting the release....explain more. You mean you can pull the key out and the actual ignition stays in place? Or you mean you can lock your ignition back without hitting the release? It shouldn't cause a problem like that. I can start my truck, run it, or turn it off all with or without the key, but everything works normal. Maybe you have two problems. Did this start all at once?

 

its a 5 speed so when you wanna pull the key out you have to push the release in, in order to pull the key back to the off position and then you can pull the key out. hope that makes sense.

and yes it started all a once, i was hauling wood today and went to move the truck and thats when it started.

 

It could be the rod, but the ignition switch could have come loose also.

 

anyone have a diagram that shows how to take the steering colum apart, or can anyone explane it?

 

I have a 93 f150 with tilt stering wheel i had a similar problem couple moths ago with my ignition switch. when i put the key in and try to spind it it was lose , didnt feel any tension on switch. if i turne it to ACC. notjing happend and whe i turn it to run it was lose all the way . only work at the finel turn to Start . but then i couldnt turn it off at all.my problem was the ignition rod. it was broken. the rod runs inside the steering colum. u can check under the colum and see if its moving when u turn the key . i found a diagram at a web site but cant remember . i try to find it so u can see how to take it appart.
