Default Narrowed Choices down

Ok so i have narrowed my choices down to the 4.9 and the 5.8, yea i know two totally different animals, heres my reasoning, the 4.9 and the 5.0 are mearly .1 liters of difference and two cylinders difference. Everybody i have talked to will swear by the straight 6 over the v8 because it has allot more torque which makes up for the hp difference. Now on to the 5.8, The biggest engine offered and believe me i love my power and i know what this engine is capable of in stock form. One thing that has me leaning to the 4.9 is its mileage advantage and nearly identical performance to the 5.0 so heres my dilemna...4.9 or 5.8. Another question i have is the automatics behind these engines, normally i am a 3 pedal guy simply because you cant trust an auto, but there are so many more automatics out there than manuals in these 150's. How do the slushboxes hold up campared to the manuals?

Stick with me im a noob to newer vehicles

Actually, 5.8 isn't the largest engine that came in these trucks. You can also find one with a 7.5. I like my 4.9, it does everything I need it to do. I like V8s too though, but the 4.9 will get better mileage. If I were doing regular heavy hauling and pulling then I would probably go for the V8, even though I do both with the 4.9. There are plenty of these trucks out there with the manual transmission. I prefer manuals now since I have burnt up every automatic I've ever had, except for my LeMans, but give me time and I'll probably take care of that one too.

That's an oops on my part. I guess they could come in a 150 but definitely in the 250 or 350.

i have had both. in the same truck actually i did motor swap. but 4.9 is underpowered. the 5.8 as good power. there is a major difference between both. i get 20 mpg with the 351. i got about 12 with the 300. and i run 10.0 to 10.1 1/8th mile all day. with a 5 speed that is. and ran about a sec or more slower with the 6 banger. its kinda your choice but thats the difference. 2wd long bed.

i don't get it, your saying here the 351 is good, and in the "I-6 to 351" topic you said the 351 is a paperweight and useless??

I would go with the 351, probably because I've only had v8's and that's where my expirence is.

I love my 4.9, it's incredibly reliable (probably the only part of the truck that hasnt needed overhaul) but I've never seen good gas mileage and only average about 12.5, sometimes 13. its got great torque and its carried weight flawlessly when ive needed it to

BUT when i get on the highway on a windy day it seems so damn slow. the higher end really sucks, and it really struggles to go faster than 65 / keep at 70 with even the slightest headwind. Nevermind if I should be driving at that speed, that's beside the point.

So I'd probably choose the 5.8
