Default Leaking Around Shifter! HELP!

I hope someone can help me out. today I replaced the 3 rubber plugs on the top of my 1994 f150 manual tranny, I "thought" there were what was leaking from all the posts I have read about those plugs....nope, plugs were fine and not leaking. However, now I believe, after getting into it, that it is leaking around where the gear shift lever enters the transmission. Is there a seal in there to replace? Anyone have a link to a parts breakdown? Upon taking the shift lever off today, there was a small round part that came off with it, maybe an inch or so in diameter, maybe 3/4 inch thick.. with a hole in the middle the size of the shift lever. There also was a very thin yet flat piece of metal wrapped around the inside of this part, not in a complete cirlce, but more like 1 turn of a coil spring. Any idea what this part is? The metal piece was all bent out of shape. Could this be my problem? Dont think so, but I am no expert on the subject. Really could use some help here. If anyone has an idea of what the problem is... can you get parts at say O'reilly's or do you have to go through Ford for these parts?
Thanks!!

You need shifter bushings, auto parts stores don't have them (that I know of).

hmmm... I could see how worn bushings could make the shifter sloppy and so forth... but worn bushings would cause a leak? is there a seal in there?

Awesome link, I've got to get me one of those.

The bushings are the seal.

Where did you happen to get the rubber plugs and how was it to put them in? I need to replace them on mine.

Got them from the Ford dealership. $10 each. turned out they were fine and it is leaking from around the shifter, do ordered a bushing kit. They weren't too bad. Really had to compress them to get the new ones in without taking off the top plate of the tranny but I did it. Pull up carpet, access panel on floor, shifter, time consuming but it's done. Ordered them Friday, Picked them up Saturday morning.
