One of the local junkyards has this cummins f350, its been running forever, he used the dodge five speed. Before the cummins he had swapped in a 300 and wore it out.

Ya it's a popular swap in Alberta! I know 3 guys that have 04-07 f250/350s that have replaced the 6.0 international with a 5.9 cummins! They all say it's the best truck they've ever owned.

Why would you need to replace the carrier to change the gear set?

The Dana 44 in the fronts stock carrier can only go up to 3.73. Any lower gear ratio then that and you need a different carrier. As for the rear the 8.8 will support a 4.10 or 4.56 with the stock open carrier. I have never looked into a limited slip carrier. I'm sure trucknut is right!

half right

I was wrong,

the 8.8 does not have a carrier break, so you can put in any gear set you want. on the stock carrier. (been a few years since i messed with one)

and the d44 up front has a 3.92 carrier break. so if you want to go with anything lower(numerically higher ie: 4:11's) you have to get a new carrier

I was told 3.73 on the stock front carrier....maybe because that's the only ring and pinion choices the parts guy could find. (3.73,4.11,4.56,4.88 )

randys ring and pinon says 3:92, but they dont offer anything other then the 3:73, then 4:11's it is prolly just one of those things. that maybe long ago they made a 3:92 lol.

Ya I'm sure back in the day some old Dana 44s had some odd ball gear ratios! Lol

Thanks for the info guys. Good knowledge. I'm still keeping a 4x4 conversion for my truck in the back of my mind. I am running 4.10 in the rear so I would need to redo the carrier and gears if I pick up a junk yard front correct? ( assuming IFS)
