Default Imagine that!!!!

Put 6 quarts of oil in my 95 5.0l. It reads about half an inch overfull on the dipstick, but it has quit using any oil.

It only holds about 4.75 quarts at the full mark on the dipstick, but it wants to use oil when it's that low.

Got to thinking the problem has to be with the dipstick and not the engine.

Chime in, what do you think?

We had a whole thread on the oil level a while back, 6qts. is what the book calls for, but I can't explain the oil usage or lack there of.

if it uses oil its going to keep doing so...the level is just different from 4 o 6 quarts... its still using it but it looks like its not because the level is different... at 4 quarts you fill the sump... at 6 it's over and just making a lake in the pan.

I'd find out where its going... most of the time its a non functioning PCV system...(sucking oil through the PCV valve)

I've put 70,000 miles on my truck and I've never had to add any oil and I've changed oil 2 or 3 times now

It takes a leap of faith to go over the full mark on the dipstick. But I think running it low was causing it to burn oil. There is no way there should be as much variants in the oil level on these vehicles.

No leap of faith. We've already verified through the owners manuals and dealer mechanics that our trucks take 6qts. Perfectly safe. After cranking and filling the filter, just make the new full mark if your dipstick shows over full.

I guess just a little freaky having the oil that high up on the dipstick. Pretty crappy build quality on that important of an item. Kind of makes you wonder about the transmission dipstick!

My 94 Big 6 is the same way. I filled with 6qts and it shows overfull. I now have some seepage from my valve cover but I attribute that to fresh new oil versus the sludge I drained outta her. No telling what the PO's did or didnt do as far as maintenence but she's mine now and I'm staying on top of it.
