I6 4.9L to a V8?
Hey guys i have a 1996 I6 4.9L 300ci engine in my truck right now...i want to put a V8 in it for more power. I was just curious about this because i want to know if i will have to change my transmission. or can i get an older engine without changing my tranny. My truck is standard, i found a few big block 400s for sale but with a carb not EFI.

You can swap to another engine with the SBF bolt pattern but the engine mounts and radiator hose setup is different. The 302 and 351w are SBF but the 460s are not. There is a pretty good demand for 300 trucks out there and your tranny wouldn't stand up to a high horse power engine, you would probably be better off selling the truck and getting one with a 351 or 460. BTW it is illegal (Federal) to install an older engine into a newer truck unless its going to be an off road vehicle only.

If you are planning a swap to a stock 5.0 ( 302 ) it is definitely not worth it. The 4.9 has more torque than the 5.0 You may get a little more power with a 351. Now if your your going to build a custom engine that's different, but you are looking at a significant investment in money to make it worth changing out the I6. For example aftermarket heads camshaft and ecu reprograming. Then the question is what are you doing with the truck that you need more power for. If you just want some off the line jump or some towing power you may be better off changing the gears.
