the wire from the alt. to the selonoid was fried, lil green one. a crunch connecter later and ole red is running like new, or like it was at least.

Fusible links at the solenoid, no fuse on the alternator. They are hard to tell if they are fried sometimes, check for continuity through them if you're unsure. There are others too near the firewall but probably one at the solenoid.
