The HEI is a good stand alone ignition system. Easy one wire hookup.

What are the advantages of an HEI vs the stock distributor and a performance ignition coil? I am doing the sixlitre tune up this weekend and want to know if it is worth the extra $100+.

I thought I just answered that. Everything in one, one wire hookup. Considered by many to be the superior setup. Not without its quirks, but mostly for high RPM applications which shouldn't be a problem in a truck.

you cant hook up a hei on a efi motor, i contacted D.U.I. a while back (they make an HEI for the 300 i6), aking about running them in a efi set up. said it wasnt doable because of the computer system.

May be good to use a carburetor after adding the HEI.

it can't be impossible. Your basically dealing with the same components. Anyone have any luck?

You quoted a 10 year old thread. Some of the posters in it have been gone for years.

It isn't impossible and has been done many times. But you have to ask yourself, WHY?

The Duraspark is an excellent system that requires minimal maintenance. Easy to troubleshoot & repair if an issue arises. The HEI is not an improvement in any way.

That statement isn't made out of brand loyalty. I've owned several of both systems over the years. My current DD is a Silverado. I like American -made trucks!

If you rely on luck when you modify a vehicle, you won't have ANY. There's also a lot of confusion in this thread due to people saying HEI when they obviously mean DUI - they're not the same. All '87-up F-series were built with HEI; none with DUI. And the Ford HEI system (TFI-IV) is as good as can be had, so there's no reason or benefit to changing it.
