Default header bolts

Hi guys, been a member for 3-4yrs now. Haven't been on much and forgot my username and it doesn't recognize my email? So this may look like my first post. I put some summit shorty headers on my '95 5.8L about 3yrs ago. One of the original gaskets finally gave way after what looks like the bolt loosening up. I bought Mr. Gasket Ultra Seal gaskets as replacements. Is there any way to prevent this in the future other then to check regularly for torque values?

Alright. So is that what most do? And for those who dont, do you just keep them tight or keep replacing gaskets? Or maybe never have a problem with them backing out over time?

Another solution (yes, it sounds crazy) is to check your header flange to make sure it is true. If it is not true, put it on a belt sander or take it to a machine shop and have them machine the flange surface true. Headers with a true surface usually don't work their way loose and/or blow gaskets.

Sounds like locking bolts and a true surface is the only way to go. Thanks guys.

mine would always back out too but that's because i put far to much anti seize on them. i put on red loctite after the second time and they were good after that.

You know you did two totally opposite things, right?

I've put 100s of headers on and never used locking bolts.... tighten them tight and they dont come loose... the loose ones are because they are tight enough in the beginning and the constant heat cycling can loosen them if they arent tight enough.

Using the Factory exhaust gaskets and tightening the bolts should give you at least 10 years service or normal driving without issue...or more
