What is the rule of thumb with changing these plug wires and component we've been speaking about? I suspect the ones I currently have are original- (I've never changed any of that stuff) and it's currently at mileage listed in signature.

The only way to find out is install em & start puttin the miles on em! You can be the "Official Forum Taylor Thunderbutt (Opps! Type-o) Plug Wire Tester" & I'll continue my MSD SuperC plug wire endurance test.

I make 700+ mile non-stops @ 80mph average (& w/ a 60K volt coil). You slam em hard at the track! So neither of us are treatin em w/ kid gloves!

What also needs to be taken into consideration is the constant thermal flux, plug wires experience w/ day to day driving! That's where I think the MSD's will prevail.

Sure the Taylors are "close", but we're not throwin hand grenades!
I have a 3 year head start. Better hurry up!

I'd say you due! Coil, plugs, wires, cap & rotor anyway. On the other stuff like the TFI,PIP, Distributor itself, I'd wait till they become problematic. Coils are like us. As we get older, we get worn out & weaker, till one day, they come pick us up & haul us off to da bone yard! Or replace our coil!

If you finish the ignition system upgrade which a brass cap & rotor is all your lacking, you can then increase your plug gap & further advance you base timing. Better performance & if you can keep your foot out of it, better MPG's! It will pay for the cap & rotor in saved gas.

Just a 2 mpg increase is 38 extra miles/tank. About $6. and change savings/ tank. It adds up!

Oh, their "in there"! Like I said, I installed them a few weeks ago and have made 8 - 1/4 mile passes on them with a 51k coil and plugs sidegapped to .060 So far so good. I will keep you posted though, as time progresses.....

"Taylors are 'close'" ha ha... Wouldn't it just kill you if you found out that your precious MSD wires were made by Taylor? (I acutally thought I read that somewhere but, I could be wrong) Like so many things these days, there typically is only a few "REAL" manufacturers and most other companies buy their product and re-badge it and..... as close as the Thundervolt's and Superconductors are, I wouldn't be surprised.

... and NO, there is no way MSD is making the wire and Taylor is buying it from them, so don't say it!

Well I can think it!

.060 Side Gap. Cool! Now that's a spark kernel that ain't pissin w/ the puppy's! How do they compare to those E3's now?
I've got around 8K on my side gaps. Wonder what their going to be good for? In tempted to pull a couple & see what they look like. Even if they were only good for 12k, their only what? $12./ change?

These are my first S/G set, and copper cores to boot. I was running double plat finewires before that. So I don't have a clue how many miles to expect. I'll probably toss em at 10K, just for something to do anyway.

A sidebar, I've ordered trucks from the factory just the way I wanted em, newer, nicer, all that peripheral stuff. But I wouldn't trade this 87' for any of em. I enjoy every time I drive it, & it's really nothing that special. But, what it does do, it does very well, and every time I turn the key! I have a girlfriend that's almost as dependable. Thank God they get along well. I'd hate to have to choose one over the other! Anyway, just thinkin outloud.

I never ended up getting the E3's, I may give em' a go next 'go-round' but, then again, like you said for about $12 why use anything other than the Motorcraft Copper Cores w/ a sidegap?!!?

I suspect we can easily get 20k miles on em' no sweat.... (I've got about 1k miles on mine so far, and all is well)

Funny, I feel the same way about my truck, people (including the ole' lady) are always telling me to buy a new truck, to which I politely reply

"NO WAY! I would only do that if I was an idiot!"

Why buy a new truck (...and I work at a Ford Dealer!) when I don't have a payment now, my insurance is $25 a month and it does everything I need it to very well?????

LONG LIVE THE 8TH GENERATION F-150'S!!
