Default Front Rotor Removal Help

I have a '92 F150 XLT 4x4 Straight 6 and I am replacing the rotors, calipers and pads. I have done most of these things in the past and learned as I went along. It was all fairly easy to pick up, however I have come to a bit I am not so sure about and was hoping someone could give me some instructions.

Getting the rotors off appears to be more involved than I had anticipated. First problem I ran into was a stripped allen screw holding the cap on the end of the (spindle ?). I eventually ended up having to drill it down till the head was barely attached to the shaft of the screw and prying the cap out till it popped off. The shaft of the screw just fell out in my hand .. rather frustrating after having spent a small fortune on various bolt/screw extraction tools.

Now that I have the cap off I can see the bearings and other parts that deal with locking in the hubs. From what I have read I need to remove all of this to get to a spindle bolt. That spindle bolt apparently holds on this large fitting (sorry I am not up on the nomenclature of the parts yet) that needs to come off in order to actually remove the rotor.

So .. I am not sure what all needs to come out or the next step I should be doing in this operation. Here are some photos, sorry about the quality. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Next step is the snap ring on the axle and there's an expansion clip that runs around the inside of the hub. You can see it in your pic, it's basically just inside of where the o ring was on your locking hub (the piece you just took off that had the allen bolts).

Okay thanks for the reply. I have managed to get the expansion clip off the hub locking mechanism. Now I am having a hard time getting this O-ring out. Any suggestions ?

Okay got it. I just couldnt see for all the grease, once I found the end of it I just slipped a small flathead under the end and it popped right out. Now I need to get this spindle nut undone. I have a 1/2" 4 wheel drive locknut socket, but cant seem to get it to catch. I can see where the four prongs should slide in, but when I get it set in there it just spins. Also I am not sure whether or not I should loosen clockwise or counter-clockwise.

Okay here is a pic of the tool .. which I have found out I could of made out of pvc pipe ! The other pic is where I am at now with removing everything.

One concern I have is this:

http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/i...lacement_.html

Where it talks about placing a mark with a center punch on the bearing locknut so it can be put back in the same place. I am afraid I have moved it from its original location. Is this a major problem and if so how do i fix this ?

I got the locknut out and removed the rotor. Now I see that the studs for the lug nuts are attached to the rotor itself and do not appear to come off .. however the new rotors I purchased have holes where the studs should be. Sorry for the noobish questions, but do I have to remove the studs from the old rotor to attach it to the new ? They are rusted on the inside pretty bad and I cannot tell exactly how they would be removed.

It appears I have answered my own question again. Studs are out and cleaned. I am ready to put on the new rotor and reassemble the locking mechanism. Hopefully I can remember the order in which everything goes.

Did you get it all John? First time around on the 4wd is always a pain. Next time will be a 1/4 time quicker. Just make sure you pack the bearings really well. When you think you have enough grease in the bearings, press just a bit more in 'em. And ive come across, if you start hearing a bearing squeak within a few weeks, just needs one more pack of grease, then your home free.
