Default Fluid help!?

I have 1996 f150 4.9, 5 speed 4x4. I need to know what kind of fluids to put in it. I have two books. One calls for power steering fluid in the power steering pump. The other calls for type F tranni fluid... I also put mercon v i the trannie and transfer case. I hope that was ok. Also would like to know what kind of hypoid oil to put into the rearend,85-90, 75-140 ect. Thanks!!

Correct me if I'm wrong but, I believe your 5 speed tranny and transfer case take Gear Oil....

The 5 speed and transfer case take Dextron ATF. It doesn't matter if it's Dextron III or V, either is fine. Any of those are fine for the power steering too, but I use Dextron so I don't have to buy a bunch of different fluids. Dextron, type F and power steering fluid are all pretty close to the same.

Dextron/Mercron are just named differently by the vehicle manufacturers. Type F and power steering fluids are different and meet different temp viscositys so do not use these in transmission or transfer cases calling for Dex/Merc fluids.

Dextron/Mercon is the same, which is why the bottles say Dextron/Mercon.

So it shouldve been dex/merc? I put mercon v in it. Will that hurt it? What about power steering? I put type F in it like the book says and I dont think it likes it. I actually think it had regular power steering fluid in it. I smell something when Im going down the road. Its power steering or trannie... So I need to find this stuff out before I ruin something.

MERCON V IS DEXTRON/MERCON. The difference is III or V, and V is better so it's good to use. Ford power steering pumps are known for being noisy so it's not the fluid you put into it, it's the pump. It will work with any of the fluids I mentioned above. To put you a little more at ease though, my book says Type F for the power steering also.

Thanks all of you! Im going to leave the mercon v in there. I dont think it is a problem. My concern is that I smell trannie fluid burning from somewhere. My assumption is that it is from the power steering and that it did have power steering fluid in it from the factory. I added type F to it and I guess it wont hurt it but it also doesnt like it. So Im going to drain out the power steering pump and gear box tomorrow and put reg ole power steering fluid in it...Things sure are different since last I owned a Ford truck. My last truck was a 79 f350 flat bed dually. It did take trannie fluid in power steering and gear oil in the trannie... WUT THE HECK!! Oh well Thanks again yall~
