exhaust question
i have 160,000 miles on my truck, 4.9, and ive been thinking about getting rid of my cats, i have two of them, one right after the other. i live in a area where theres no emissions test. im not sure if id being doing my engine any good or not. could my cats still be good after all those miles, and is it normal to have two of them. is my engine going to run ok removing them.
there is only 1 and that is the rear one... the front one is just a distribution chamber and is empty...
the rear is a dual cone cat if it is factory...if you can get the pipe off after the cat just knock the cones out...or take a 1in spade bit and drill holes in it and then when you're done fire it up and rev it a few times and blow the crap out...then put your piupe back on...easy peasy

They are both cats, each one works in a slightly different way. I cut mine off and hollowed them out, both had crap in them. I then welded them back on. You need to get all the stuff out or it can plug up later, drilling small one inch holes just isn't going to do it. The truck runs the same or if not slightly better, and the exhaust has a "hollower" sound.
my front one was empty with nothing in it...I drilled out the later one with a 1in spade bit making 3 holes close together..then I knocked out the parts between the holes...I noticed a BIG change and mine wasnt plugged as the front cone would have had build up on it and it didnt...3...1 inch holes is plenty as that amount is bigger than the inlet or outlet...
It was some kind of thin metal inside the cat. It could easily loosen up and block the holes that were drilled. I've heard too many people warn to get it all out because they didn't and it clogged.
ok i found a exhaust from checker, no cats. it does have the bung for the O2 sensor but nowhere to connect the smog pump tube. do i need the tube from the smog pump connected or can i just cap it off.

Without a catalytic converter the smog tube into the exhaust pipe is useless. The smog pump helps the cat burn off the hydrocarbons by introducing oxygen into the cat. You don't need to cap the smog port at the pump, and you probably shouldn't. Just remove the whole thing, but leave the control solenoids hooked up.
