I can't believe this thread ended this way. I really need to know what happened. I have the recurring code 33. I changed egr valves (junkyard), but still get the code. At operating temp the truck runs rough and starts with a slight idle surge. I recently changed the IAC to a brand new one. This helped, but I think the rest is the egr system. I want to clear code 33 and I would like to know if/how this guy did that. I also get code 44 (thermactor air system inoperative on right side?) and I don't know if it relates. I have a 1989 F150 5.0 FI 2wd. I just ordered today from rock auto the egr valve and solenoid. This problem has been giving me fits just like the guy who started this thread. Anyone know what happened. Aliens8mycow you out there?

Back to basics - fix the injector, see what happens.

Yeah, I'm still around...

I can't bear to read this entire thread and relive the horror, but the truth at the end of this whole ordeal is this - I don't really know what finally fixed it!

I did have more than one issue at the same time, which made this a real pain in the ***** to sort out.

Problem 1 - the bad injector. Simple enough, once I figured it out with the help of everyone here.

Problem 2 - loud ticking sound - found it too, it's a bad crank bearing. Still ticking after two years - it'll die someday, but until then I've grown used to it.

Problem 3 - EGR - I'm getting a cold sweat... this was ridiculous! I really have no idea what the magic part was, or if it's the same one you're looking for. I ended up replacing the EGR valve, the sensor on top of it, the EGR tube (this seemed to make a really big difference), every vacuum line on the truck, the EGR solenoid (actually all 3 of the solenoids on the left side valve cover), the IAC, TPS, and I think something to do with the thermactor deal, but can't remember which part.

...should've bought a crate motor

Dude, that was one hell of a thread. Are you still driving that thing? How's it runnin now? I think I know what your problem was and it is funny that I have every problem you got with the truck except the injector. I got the tick too and I am sure it is the same thing. The great thing about these trucks is that everything is so robust and big that they will run for 100 years if you put oil in em! I believe your egr problem (after replacing all of the other egr components) may have been that damn evp sensor gasket. They tend to leak and you can't just buy the gasket. I just wanted you to know that all your pain helped me out with this one and I am experiencing the same horrors but we will see when the new valve and solenoid comes in.

Good luck with yours - this thread has a lot of information (or at least tail chasing!) for anyone trying to sort out EGR issues.

And yes - I drive it everyday, and it's running great. (aside from the loud ticking sound)

Aliens.....Forgot to ask you.....Did you ever resolve code 33? I know you got it running good, but did you get the code to go away? This is important for me to know. Thanks.

Yes - somewhere along the line, the 33 went away. I don't remember exactly which component did the trick, but it did go away...

With the EGR vacuum line connected, revving the throttle doesn't move the valve, but that could be due to the solenoid.

So... should I begin this journey with a $35 EGR solenoid and a $50 O2 sensor?
I think I should point out that for "Trucks only", #33 is EGR Valve failure, not closing properly. Either clogged, of mechanical failure. Or Vac from EGR regulator when there should not be. Should be no Vac at idle.http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/?p=43

Code 33 eliminated. Here's what I did..... Replaced the egr valve with a brand new one, replaced the egr solenoid with a new one, checked all vacuum lines, put new gasket on evp and made sure it was seated properly. While I did the installs, I reset the codes. Upon startup with new parts and driving around, starting, and revving engine here and there, I pulled codes again. Code 33 gone. I still have code 44, but that is the thermactor failure. I think that may be a solenoid. Just for your information...I tried cleaning my old valve and replacing with one from the junkyard. They did not do the trick. I would warn you that some of the problem may be due to the evp gasket leaking so don't forget to replace that and don't underestimate that as a cause for problem.

So now I have the smog pump system to work on. This after my egr horrors. You know....we have the liberals to thank for all this.
