It depends on what you did to it. If you had the distributor out, triple check the timing. If you pulled the engine, make sure everythings hooked up right. What did you do to it? Also, when you try to start it, what is it doing? slow crank, good fast crank, no crank, backfire, etc?

and yet you still have not told us what you did to the motor in the first place, since you "got it back together"

one of my buddys borrowed the truck. he switched to the tank i dont use and sucked up bad gas. couldnt keep it running. so he sprayed her full of ether and it backfired and bent 5 ****in pushrods. so it got the top end rebuilt. im thinking my timing is off. its backfiring a little and kinda popping but wont actually start. gotta look at that tomorrow. probably what it is. but im not dead sure. im trying to eliminate all possible problems. i knew the ect could make it act funny, but didnt know if it would stop running at all. just goin down my list. had someone tell me it could be the pip. but i dont know about that either. gotta make sure it's timed first.

Timing is definitely off. Make sure the number 1 piston is on the compression stroke when the balancer mark passes by the timing mark. Get the timing right and that should solve your problem...unless it bent some valves too...

Your check engine light is always on with the key on. It goes out when it's running.

I won't even let my wife drive my truck. That's the exact reason though. People always find a way to mess something up. haha

Lol I wont let my GF drive my truck anymore, now my 2nd gear shifts rough unless I tach match it perfectly, it feels like a syncro. But yes bad timing is certainly a culprit, and if you bent 5 push rods i would have extensively looked over the heads for bend valves or rocker arms out of place. Hope that timing chain is back in properly.
