Default e4od tranny problems

i have a 1991 f150 with a 302 and e4od, after a long drive the engine temp is above its normal reading and a good amount of atf leaks out the bell housing but after cooling down there is no more leak, are there any common problems with the e4od trannys or does it sound like a bad pump or torque converter?

It sounds like you need to figure out why the truck is overheating.

when is the last time you flushed and filled the trany?

I would recommend that...Lucas additive too...there is a drain plug on the converter and it takes 18 quarts empty...drain it all and replace the filter....easily done yourself...

getting hot and the fluid is thinning out and bypassing the front seal...

'88-'91 have the spot for the mechanical speedometer on the tailshaft housing. '92-'96 have electronic speedometers so they don't have have that spot. You can add the mechanical speedometer to the '92-'96 but you need the speedometer gear from the tailshaft and the housing off of a '88-'91 tranny. The '92-'96 is also stronger than the '88-'91.

like how much stronger are they and in what kind of way, is it worth buying one from a 1990 for a cheap price?

I'm not sure how much stronger, that's just what I read while I was doing my research on them. I swapped in the M5OD to replace my TOD 4 speed. The only one I found at the time was from a '96, so I just used it because I needed the truck fixed right away. I finally found an older one to get the speedometer parts.

Oh, yours is 4x4? Then you can use any of those year trannys, the speedometer hooks to the transfer case. The starter should be the same, and the donor crossmember should bolt right in place.
