Default door locks problem

This has been a problem I've had with the truck since it came into my possession. I think the (only) key I have for the truck is the valet key or something, because it only works the ignition, not the door locks. Suggestions on how to deal with this? I already called a couple ford dealerships, they can't cut a new key based on the vin because the truck is earlier than 2001, and all the locksmiths in town seem to not do auto work. I've heard things about buying new lock cylinders with key and replacing the ones in the truck

reasonably sure, the key looks very much like a valet key. it has that "too simple to be a real key" look that I associate with valet keys. the most likely scenario is that the previous owner (my father in law) lost the real key and started using the valet key, or that it only came with the valet key when he bought it used. he doesn't remember ever having any other key for it anyway

I have seen kits that will provide you a key for the door locks. I have two keys for my 90

I would believe so... As the new keys would be fitted to those particular lock cylinders

A PO probably replaced the ignition lock cylinder so that key will not work in your door locks. You could purchase new door locks with keys, then you will have two keys to contend with. The lower section of the key operates the ignition and the upper (toward the key head) operates the door lock. After replacing the door locks you could have a locksmith cut a new key using the ignition and the door cuts so you would have one key again.

Alternative number two would be to have the locksmith cut one side of a key for the ignition and the other side for the door lock. You just cut a notch in one side of the key head to remind you which way to insert it in the lock to make it work.

door locks are easy to change.

Open the door and remove door panel for access. Inside the door locate said lock and remove clip and rod or pull rod out if plastic clip.

One the rod is off then on the outer door jamb there is a spring clip that holds the lock cylinder in place. Pull that out and then slide the lock and install new cylinder in reverse order
