Default clutch problems

hey guys (and girls) im 17 and recently got my licence and got the oldest most beat up truck on the farm. my parents have always had ford f150 and recently a 2009 f25o super duty (awsome). my truck was parked back in the bush and left till we could take it to a wreckers due to not being needed and being in bad shape. the truck had sat for, not even kidding 6 years. when my truck was pulled out yes it was rusty yes it was dented however after an oil change it started right away and the tires had never went soft. right then i fell in love with the truck. right away we put plates on it and took it for a quick trip after about an hour of driving the truck ran, shifted and ran good exept we soon found out it needed a head gasket. i had never worked on anything this big before and bot a haynes manuel and started on the truck, a month later and roughly 3 grand in parts including a new head, a rebuilt head, all new gaskets, water pump, alternator, 250$ battery, distributer, almost everything, it ran like a champ. now the engine runs great but problems arose when about 3 months later the cutch stoped working right. my dad has always had to add brake fluid to the cluch in order for it to function but only ever couple of months.

now the clutch resivior needs to be filled up everytime you want the clutch to work. the clutch petal works, just dosent disengage the clutch until you cycle it through for a few minuets. i have been told that it is a leaking slave cylander. where is this. can i fix it without removing the tranny. is there anything else i can do? any help would be greatly apreciated. please i love this truck i almost cried when dad took the pplates off it and left it at the back of the farm.

Welcome to the site!

The slave cylinder is inside the bell housing - will have to pull the transmission to replace.

The leak could be happening anywhere - be sure to check out the clutch master cylinder also - should see fluid leaking down the firewall either inside or outside of the cab where it penetrates to connect up with the clutch pedal. By now, you've probably got air in the system, which will make things seem worse.

In short, yes, it's likely the slave - but don't overlook the easier stuff before tearing into it.

Hey, welcome to the forum. Now, I am no mechanic by any means, but I am working on my clutch system right now because I was told that my slave cylinder is bad as well. I have a 89' f150 supercab. My slave cylinder is INTERNAL (concentric) and the tranny HAS to be removed to replaced. While it is out I am replacing the clutch disk, pressure plate, pilot and throwout bearing. FYI, The clutch set usually comes with the all that is mentioned. The Flywheel should be either replaced or turned, the former best. The slave cylinder could come with or without a throwout bearing; mine came with one, so I would have two. Finally, I would consider replacing the master clutch cylinder when replacing the slave, I am doing so as well. Look at the line that comes from the master cylinder and see if it is metal or plastic and where it runs to. If it is plastic, it will most likely be a hydraulic line going into a internal slave cylinder, necessary tranny removal, uuughh!! If when you follow the line it runs into a part outside of the tranny, then it is external (DUH!!!) and an easy fix without the need to remove the tranny. Good Luck!! I am still trying to put mine back on.

Welcome! First off the best thing to do is for YOU to do it, you will learn the best! The flywheel is bolted to the engine, that is what the clutch goes against. The master cylinder is the thing were you put the fluid in for the clutch. Good Luck!

You would turn the flywheel as you would turn the brake drums or rotors. Turning them trues up the surface, making it smooth and flat. The flywheel would have to be removed and taken to a shop that can turn it. I personally don't do anything with the flywheel unless it is really bad or grooved. As long as you can remember how everything goes back together and as long as you don't drop the transmission on you then I think it's an easy job.
