Default Clutch

Have been reading on the firewall clutch flex. My sons 87 has just very slight flex almost none. To clutch it you have to push the pedal like your trying to go through the floor even then its not fully engaged. There is no slip from the clutch and it starts grabbing right off the floor. I am glad we bought this six months from his b-day as he can learn from this. Is there adjustments on the clutch? I will order a Haynes manual today. Thanks guys.

I'm having this exact same issue in my 94. I don't know if 87 has a hydraulic system, but if you do this problem is caused by air in the hydraulic lines. All you need to do is bleed the system. If you have a mechanical connection, yes there is an adjustment. Both processes have a detailed how-to in the Haynes.

Yes they have hydraulics, except the clutch slave is on the outside of the transmission that pushes on a clutch release bearing lever on the bell housing.

Apparently the fix to the firewall flex is to reinforce it. Either welding in a steel plate or bracing the corner of the firewall.

'87 does have an adjustable clutch master pushrod. But that would be a temporary fix. Welding the plate back to the firewall works best for the flex.

My 88 doesn't have an adjustment. Is the 87 the same?

They changed to the non-adjustable in '88.

If you bleed your clutch, no change, weld the reinforcment no change, check the pedal mounting bracket. It is the assembly that houses the pedals that bolts to the dash and firewall. It may be cracked causing flex not allowing the pedal to do full travel.
