Default Check engine light on. Code reader wont work

Have a 96 with a fresh 5.0 my speedometer stopped working and my overdrive flash's , check engine light came on and so did my abs light. I bought a scanner and tried to scan the codes but the scanner did not work on the truck but I know the scanner works . Is this normal?

Don't know why the reader wouldn't work unless a fuse was blown. As for the rest of your problems, is your truck automatic? Does it shift hard? If so could be your VSS (vehicle speed sensor) on the axle. That could be setting off the ABS light and the check engine.

Yup mine did the same, the fuse had a slight burn on it, still worked but probably created too much resistance for the com port. Glad it works tho

The only thing I can help with, at the moment, is the flashing O/D light. If it is flashing, there is a problem in the transmission and the flash pattern is the trouble code. I saw this info a post a few years ago. Someone here should be able to tell you what the code means.

Good luck!

I had the same problem when I first got the truck abs light on and flashing od light on the shifter but it was intermittent I changed the sensor and It worked fine for about 2 months then back to intermittent now it's doing the same other then the speedo is dead now. Is it the sensor again? And why they die so fast if it is.
