If you leave the solenoids the check engine light won't come on.

The benefits are less weight, less rotational drag on the engine. The negatives are increased emissions.

what benefits do you get from blocking off the EGR, and how do you go about doing it the right way?
Egr is meant to lower Nox by lowering combustion temp, theoretically you should have more power without it but it won't pass inspection with or without it activating the check engine light

It lowers the Nox by enrichenning the fuel air mix, less air same fuel. You can get better results by having the computer adjust the mix and with a proper cat. The air injection dilutes the exhaust faking the sniff tests. You can block the egr if you live in an area that does not smog test. If you look at the late 60's vehicles in a smog test you will be surprised at the levels that they must meet to pass emissions. Most have a lower Nox and CO level than new cars must meet.

The smog pump does not "fool" the sniffer, it introduces fresh oxygenated air into the exhaust to promote a more complete burn of the unburned hydrocarbons.

it does NOT enrichen the fuel mixture as you say...it introduces Exhaust into the intake manifold...

EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation this means it recirculates the exhaust gases thru the engine as to try and "reburn" them thus cooling the cylinder and cleaning the burn.

It does however make the engine think its slightly richer as the EGR gasses take place of Oxygen that would normally be there if the EGR was closed...

The fuel map compensates for when it thinks the EGR is open so this is why it runs a tad lean when its unhooked. Plus you get a hotter cylinder combustion temperature....just remember Heat make power to a certain point...

Cons of unhooking an EGR are reduced timing and Ping/Detonation...with the EGR unhooked you will need to reduce timing under load or it will detonate and eventually kill itself.

there is NOTHING to gain by unhooking the EGR... you can actually have more power with it hooked up as you can put more timing in the motor thus get it going quicker...especially light throttle

yes...in a sense...the AIR system is in place to help burn off extra unburnt fuel in the Cats...without the AIR system the cats will live a shorter life...

there are 2 types of set ups..AIR pre-cat and AIR after cat...after is to just fool the EPA sniffer

so what im getting from this is too keep the EGR there, and to take off the smog stuff?

what all is required other then to take the actual pump off? need a smaller belt im assuming? and with a good running engine, what is the likelyhood of passing an emisions test with that gone?

Depending on the type of inspection you could fail just for removing it.
