Another tranny ? in bool form ...
'93 5.0 115k, unsure which tranny I have. The mechanic today said it took 14 qts, so would that be the C6? Anyway, I've had the truck now for 2 months, not my DD. I had a local reputable shop change the tranny, transfer case and diff fluid last week in anticipation on a long haul. Drove the truck from Minneapolis to Rockford, Il. to pick up my '80 Vespa from my son. On the way down no problems. On the way back just prior to Eu Claire I noticed fumes in my mirrors. Pulled off at Hwy 12 and the tranny was leaking bad. Had the mechanics take a look at it after it cooled down, 6 quarts low but the leak stopped and it shifted fine for their shakedown. On the way home I'm watching for smoke off the exhaust and eyeballing the gauges. Everything's fine for a while and then the tach jumps about 500 rpms and stays there, so I'm reading around 2k at 55 to 60. A little later smoke, I pull over and a minor leak is back. OK, now I know what to look for so I hit the road. Outside of St. Paul it starts up again, when I pull off at the next exit its got a thud during the shifts. I found a shady spot let it cool down and check the fluid. It's a little low but fine. Get back on the Hwy and head home thud has disappeared, RPM back to normal. What do you suppose the problem is? Filter? Worse? That would be Book form?
Thanks
Thanks

Probably a AOD tranny, the C6 is a older 3 speed (no overdrive). Do you have any idea where it is leaking from? Check the rear seal where the driveshaft plugs in, this is common spot to leak from on older trucks. Also check the pan and make sure the vent on the top of the trans isnt pluged with mud or grime. Also make sure your cooler lines are getting hot just to be sure it's cooling. Its also a good idea for any car or truck over 100K to have a extra tranny cooler. The radiator cooler can get buildup on the inside and stop working over time.
The RPM spike is probably due to slipping caused by low fluid and heat. Sounds like a front seal. I haven't really worked on this part of a trans yet, hopefully some other guys with more transmission exp will reply. Your probably going to have to pull the trans to fix this. If you put it off you will burn up the trans by running it low on fluid.
So I finally had a chance to start the Big Boy up and things aren't the same as when I shut it down Sunday night. Loping at idle, put it into reverse and it stalls. I've been able to feather the gas to move it back a few feet but that's it. D is better but not great. Shut it down and retry. Idle is fine but I've got the same reverse problem. Now on my trip I camped, and when I put the truck into reverse it stalled hard once. I thought it was unusual but it fired up again and didn't do it again until today. Also while warming up at idle another time today the idle seemed to reset itself and I'm not talking about kicking down after warm up. As far as the loping idle, the 1st time I was aware of it was while waiting for the mechanics to finish up in WI.. I was watching and listening and the lope started and stopped, not to show up again until today. So I've got a few issues here, I'm thinking I should get the engine sorted prior to the tranny. Where do I start? Check engine light only comes on after the truck stalls.

Code 452=Insufficient or no input from vehicle speed sensor. Does your speedometer work? If it doesn't then you need to fix the sensor. If it does the signal isn't reaching the computer, which tells it how fast the truck is going and when and how to shift.
Code 628=Convertor clutch error (E4OD). Without the input from the vehicle speed sensor the torque convertor clutch won't lock in. The computer senses this and stores this code.
