Default Abrupt downshifting!

I just had the truck in for a big tune up and they didn't say anything about this but when the truck downshifts it makes an audible sound (it's not a bang or a very loud sound it's more a feel through the floor), then abruptly downshifts. You can really feel it. The truck is a 1993 5.0 and shifts up just fine. It's just when downshifting (it's like a thwump sound and it downshifts kind of abruptly).
Is this a big problem? I'm going to have to pay big time for a new transmission? Or is it normal for a truck that's 15 years old? It's actually more abrupt now that the tune up happened.

Oh yeah, it's an automatic.

Have you checked codes to see if there are any clues? Is this an E4OD tranny?

Yeah, had it in because the check engine light was coming on and going off. There were no error codes and I think on the 1993 the computer isn't linked to the transmission. It just had the original distributor cap and rotor, needed wires, plugs and had vac leaks. I'm sure I'll just have to take it in. It shifts up just fine and smooth. I believe it is the E40D. It's the one with PN(D)D1

The E4OD is computer controlled, and should throw codes if it has troubles. Do you have an OD button on the dash? I think that's only on the E4OD (don't quote me on that...)

no i think it's the other type. There's no OD button. It's kinda pointless to keep asking questions on a forum. It's got a problem, I need to just take it in.

It's only pointless if you're the type that takes the truck in for every problem. If you want to fix it yourself then asking questions helps. So if you're the first type then take it in and pay through the nose. If you're the second type then adjust the kickdown cable. The tranny without the OD button has the kickdown cable, the one with the OD button doesn't.

well see that's the thing. i don't know what a kickdown cable is. I don't have the space to do this kind of stuff myself.
