95 5.0 help
Hey guys, new here but need some help! First of all I have gotten my dads 1995 Ford F-150 2wd and want to get it running right and use it for some towing. My dad has spent almost a $1000 with a shop locally and has got nothing but more problems so I am going to fix it myself.
The problems:
First, it doesn't run right and drinks way too much gas and throws the check engine light off and on constantly. When idling it stumbles alot and wants to cut off. When driving it, it hessitates when you mash the gas alot when u start off and you have to floor it, wait 10 sec. and then it throws u back in your seat and goes full power. The shop ran the codes and said one was the MAF sensor and another code they couldn't identify and said it needed a new MAF sensor and it did the same thing. It also got new plugs and wires and the throtle body cleaned. Then he was told the fuel pump in the front tank wasn't putting out enough and that was it. Now they replaced that and in the process they had to wire in the new one and shorted something out by wiring it wrong and the gas gauge doesn't work. They re-wired it afterwards by Fords diagram but it still doesn't work. Ford said there is suppose to be current on one wire and none of them have current going to them. Also in the process the cruise and remote start stoped working. Don't know if its related or not tho....
What I need to know:
What could cause this problem with how it runs or where should I start next? Also what could have been shorted out to stop the gas gauge from working? Oh and the sending unit was replaced after the fuel pump and the gauge still doesn't work.

Wow... you've got a lot going on here! Take a look at one issue at a time, and this will be a lot simpler to figure out.
My first recommendation would be to have the local parts store pull codes for you, and post them here so that the forum can help get you going in the right direction. They should be able to give you a list of code numbers, and several people here can help 'decode the codes'. Some stores even have a loaner program and will loan you a reader for free or for a cheap rental fee.
It sounds to me like your running really rich, but it's hard to say why without some guidance from your engines computer.
Last but not least, if your shop couldn't identify a check engine code, you should probably find a new shop...

I thought parts stores only reads codes for 96 and newer obd2 systems and I have a 95. But I know the shop is crappy which is why I told my dad I would fix it myself sence he got ripped off already.
*Edit* Looks like I can get a code reader for $30 so if they don't I'll try that!

You can read the codes yourself without buying anything. This thread will tell you how:

I think I've had a few too many buds while watching football all day! Yeah - 95 you can read with the CEL. The box should be mounted on the drivers' fenderwell area. Just behind the airbox.
It might take a couple of tries to get the rythm of the light flashing so that you can be sure you're reading them right.

I assume the 95 is the same as my 91 - you can use a wire with alligator clips and jump them from the back side (the side the wires go it), or a wire with spade connectors to jump them from the front side.
