Yea man, just an inspection hole. The plug that goes there doesn't even seal out water, it just covers the hole. By the way, transmissions aren't considered submersible.

I figured that much man haha. But shouldn't it be able to handle going through the equivalent of a puddle?? The only part that gets wet if anything is just the bottom, I don't go into anything that even cones halfway up the tires.

The slipping may be from water getting into the main wiring harness connector for the transmission. Take it apart, clean it and put some dielectric grease in there. And it could possibly from an over worked trans. That rubber plug is an inspection cover and it needs to be there. Its a $5 part that will cost you some money down the road. It sounds like you play in the mud. You get dirt in there and it can ruin your front pump seal. It would be best to get that plug before you play in the mud.

If it's like my Thunder Chicken, it's a access hole to allow you to pull a plug on the torque converter to drain the fluid from it without pulling the tranny.

You don't need the plug. If seals couldn't get dirty and wet then the rear tranny seal would leak all the time. I do like his wet wiring idea though, sounds very reasonable.

The plug is needed. If it wasn't Ford wouldn't have wasted money putting it there. The rear tranny seal has two parts. The boot protects the seal as much as possible. Its like the rear pinion seal. It has the plastic protector to cover the pinion seal so its harder for dirt to get in there. You have the boot and then the seal for the tailshaft.

Alright here, get the plug, got it!

On the splipping, I think that's what it is (this is my first vehicle), happens like this: I'll be cruising at say 50 and then the revs will go up to where they sit at 60(by sound, tach broke) and stay there for 2 seconds to a minute and then drop back down. And at 30 it'll sound like it does at 37 for the same period of time before going back to normal. Would that be trans slip? It never does the whole revvvvvvvvvv and then catch thing from a stop either.

Where is that wiring harness? And do I just clean the thing, cover it in that dielectric grease and plug it back in? For cleaning, can I just spray it with water, or is there a better way? Sorry for all the questions! Just trying to learn

The electrical connector to the transmission, you would unplug it, clean it and put the grease in the plug then plug it back in. Just like with a spark plug wire where you squirt it in the boot.

Weekend project, 'cause I have no time till then.

Junkyard was unsucessful, wasn't anything with an E4OD, or a truck with a back window lock to steal. And I'm pretty sure Ranger windows won't fit...

I got my rear window lock off a Chevy and made it work.
